360° Digitalization: The Future of Small Businesses
E-commerce in Mexico is growing faster than the economy, yet most businesses still do not sell online. A practical path to close the gap.
Your customers are already online. They search, compare and buy from their phones. The question is no longer whether your business should go digital, but how fast and in what order.
The latest data from Mexico shows a clear gap: consumers have moved faster than businesses. For a small or mid-sized company, that gap is an opportunity.
Consumers are already digital
According to INEGI's 2025 ENDUTIH survey, 86.1% of the population aged 6 and older used the internet in 2025: 104.9 million people. 84.6% used a cell phone, while only 38.1% used a computer [1]. Mobile is the main channel.
E-commerce is following the same curve. The Mexican Online Sales Association (AMVO) reports in its 2026 Online Sales Study that retail e-commerce reached 941 billion pesos in 2025, up 19.2%. It now accounts for 17.7% of total retail, and the base of digital shoppers reached 77.2 million people [2].
Another finding from the same study: 7 in 10 shoppers already combine physical and digital channels [2]. Your customer does not separate your store from your website. They expect one experience.
Businesses are moving slower
INEGI's 2024 Economic Census shows the other side. Between 2018 and 2023, the share of establishments selling online grew from 3.0% to 5.5%. Among SMBs (11 to 250 employees), it rose from 18.7% to 28.8%. Among micro-businesses, from 2.1% to 4.4% [3].
The progress is real, but most businesses still do not sell online. And micro-businesses make up 95.5% of all establishments in the country [3]. Among businesses that used the internet, the most common tools were search engines (83.8%) and file repositories (57.7%); cloud services reached 28.6% and data analytics 23.3% [3]. There is plenty of room to grow.
A three-stage path
Going digital does not mean doing everything at once. It means moving in order and measuring results at every step.
- Presence: a fast, clear, mobile-first website that explains what you do and how to reach you. It is your foundation of trust.
- Sales: an online store or digital quoting channel, connected to inventory and payments, with defined logistics.
- Operations: automate repetitive processes such as orders, invoicing, inventory and customer follow-up, with a CRM or ERP built around how you work.
Each stage supports the next. An online store without organized internal processes creates errors. An internal system without a digital presence does not bring in new customers.
Think about the device, too. If 84.6% of people use a cell phone and fewer than 4 in 10 use a computer [1], every stage should be designed mobile first: a site that loads fast on mobile data, a checkout you can finish with your thumb and notifications that reach customers where they already are. What works on mobile almost always works on desktop. The reverse is not always true.
What to get right from the start
AMVO notes that shoppers value accurate descriptions, reviews and reliable order tracking, and that receiving incomplete or damaged products is their biggest pain point [2]. Digitalization does not end on the screen. It touches the entire operation.
- Start with the problem that costs you most today, not the trendiest tool.
- Choose technology that can grow with you and integrate with other systems.
- Measure from day one: visits, quotes, sales, response times.
- Train your team. A tool only works if people use it.
